About the Artist Add to Favorites
Judi Andersen is a self-taught artist working in acrylic, pen & ink, linoleum cuts, and fabric. She is inspired by music, a strong sense of history, and the interconnectedness of all things. She considers herself a visionary artist, using surrealistic techniques. She enjoys creating optical illusions by manipulating the rules of perspective. This way, she can create worlds in two dimensions that cannot exist in three. Her strong sense of composition and design help anchor the otherwise otherworldly concepts swirling in her mind.
For Judi, the creative process is a journey. Ideas come from aspects of life and history she would like to explore. Sketches interspersed with research help a basic design take shape. This design begins in her mind's eye, and as it evolves, takes on a life of its own. As in the best journeys the end result is often a surprise.
Influences include MC Escher, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Aubrey Beardsley. Her muse and "studio helper" is Rudy; a black, tan, and white tabby cat.
She has won several awards for her art, and exhibits locally and regionally near her home. She has taught quilting, and art perspective and has been an artist-in-residence at the Hill School in Pottstown, PA.
Judi's artistic background includes graphic arts, interior decorating, pottery, and weaving. Other interests include freelance writing and editing, beadwork, and gardening.
Judi lives in Phoenixville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA.
