About "White Room"
This painting is based on the 1968 Cream song of the same name. In it is a train station where shadows "run from themselves" as trains move past one another. The painting was inspired by images the lyrics invoke inside me. The station is a shape and color I've imagined recurrently from earliest memory - terra cotta towers. They are also found in the work of surrealist Remedios Varo. I wonder if I saw some of her work when I was little, or if we're on a similar wavelength...
I won an Award of Excellence for "White Room" in 1993. The original is a 22 x 30 acrylic on paper and is in the private collection of another artist.

About "Hotel California"
This drawing is based on the Eagles' song of the same name, depicting a place that once inside,
one can never leave. With no correct right-side-up and multiple views, I create a labyrinth feel to illustrate
that concept. Optical illusions abound. For example: the stairway near the center between the courtyard and the
hallway of rooms can be used successfully from either end until the last stair, where it is impossible to step off.
The pillars on either side of the "night man" at the lobby desk are the same size from the same vantage point as the
third pillar to your right. However, I placed it at the top of a stairway - impossible in 3-D. Many people who own
this print like to listen to the song and try to find everything in it. (It's basically all there...)
I won an Honorable Mention for "Hotel California" in 1995. The original is a 14 x 14 pen and ink.

About "At the Altar"
Do you know a cat who comes running to the sound of an electric can opener?
Since Egyptians once worshipped cats, it's no surprise this altar sprang from ancient ruins there.
Past, present, and future all meld into one magical world where the cats are quite at home.
They also know who that really is in the moon...

About "Through Her Hands"
A self portrait drawn for the souvenir poster of my first solo show,
"Through Her Hands" was inspired by the John Hiatt song "Through Your Hands." I feel the
song speaks to me and of my life. It tells the subject to put all his or her heart into whatever
the hands find to do as the way that individual will "move mountains." My drawing depicts a blend
of images from the lyrics and from my artwork as well as things I love.

About "There Are No Children Here"
The painting within the painting depicts one by my father; of a Hungarian revolution
refugee in the 1950s. I was inspired by it in 1995 during the 50th anniversaries of the atomic
bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the end of World War II, and the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam
War. I saw new meaning in a phrase from a song; "scientific darkness." I portray the scientists
seeking the child - looking for the impact they will have. Their flashlight beams are black so she
is invisible to them. The doors represent alternative, but uncertain options. A nuclear bomb casts
an ominous shadow. One mushroom cloud contains the crucifixion. As in a lot of art, questions are
explored, but not necessarily answered...
The original is a 20 x 28 acrylic on paper.

About "Desert City With Mirage"
This drawing was inspired by the song "City Don't Cry" by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Images conjured from the lyrics took on a life of their own as I drew. I explore lots of questions and ideas, loosely based on the song. The inherent conflicts and dynamics of the Middle East as birthplace to three major world religions are touched on. I use the mirage concept where there is usually a mirror image, to lay bare different sides of the same truths. Superimposed images overlay spiritual (good and evil as depicted by Gabriel and Satan) reality and material reality.
The original is a 22 x 30 pen & ink on paper. |
