Featuring archival digital prints of linoleum cuts by Judi Andersen. Click on any image to see a larger version.

Scroll up and down to browse the artwork. A brief description appears under each image. A more detailed one accompanies each item purchased. Please note: All prints in this gallery come with a white mat. All except the Mandalas also have "black core," which means the white mat is black inside revealing a narrow line where it is beveled - a nice border effect.

About Linoleum Cuts: Linoleum block printing is an art medium that produces original prints. The image is carved into a piece of linoleum mounted on a board. The block is then covered with ink. Paper is placed over it and it is printed either by use of a press or a baren. I use a baren - a hand-held disk that is pressed against the back of the paper so it will absorb the ink. More than one block is used in prints with distinct color separations. If the artist intends to limit the edition, as I do, the blocks are slashed so they cannot be used again. About "Isaiah 2:4"
"They shall beat their swords into plowshares." Here I use the "metamorphosis" technique pioneered by MC Escher in which an object is drawn and the negative space around it is used to create a second object. I explore the possibility of turning implements of war into tools of peace and prosperity. For the contrast necessary to define the negative spaces I use the symbolism of night and day, or darkness and light.

About "When Will We Ever Learn"
The Pete Seeger song "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" inspired this piece. I use the MC Escher technique of "metamorphosis" - using the space between objects to form the next object. It tells the story of flowers picked by young girls, who are gone to young men, gone to soldiers, then graveyards, and once again to flowers.

About "Back to the Garden"
Inspired by Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock," I show bombers turning into butterflies. I use MC Escher's "metamorphosis" technique of turning spaces between objects into the next object. When I began this piece, something interesting happened: Sketching jets in various positions, I found by putting four together, the shape of a bomb appeared in the center!

About Mandalas I, II, and III:
The mandala is an Eastern symbol used in meditation. It is contained in a circle. It traditionally includes writing, but I prefer to make simple designs, so one can apply any meaning one wishes. All three here were done as a study of balance and harmony. All incorporate a yin and yang principle.
To make these blocks, I only carved half of the whole symbol. I then used the one block as two - changing the colors and direction to put them together. Technically they are two color, two block prints. The two blocks being one symbolizes the balance and harmony of my subjects.

The colors represented here are influenced by the settings and quality of your monitor.
