Threat of Terrorism Inspires Story Line of Harm's Way
Gary Cochran, the author of Harm's Way served three years in the United States Marine Corps as the commander of a surface-to-air missile platoon. Prior to his assignment to Viet Nam, Gary had to personally shoot down an unmanned aircraft as part of his training. Subsequently, he realized how easy it would be to steal some of these shoulder-fired stinger missiles. Following his military service, Gary concentrated his efforts in developing and consulting with several successful international businesses. During this period of time Gary got his private pilot's license and purchased several planes including a Citation Jet. While departing from Salt Lake International Airport, Gary noticed the wet marshlands to the west of the airport and an alarm went off in his mind!
What if a group of terrorists stole some of these shoulder fired heat seeking missiles and began a reign of terror, the likes of which had never been imagined? He realized just how vulnerable our country is to a frightening, but waiting-to-happen scenario, one where terrorists could virtually destroy our nation with only a few of these missiles. Gary landed the jet on the tarmac of the airport and asked himself a second, even more important question. What motivation could start this shocking chain of events to take place, and how could it be stopped?
