 Our
entire country has been devastated by the events of September 11th.
An immediate impact was felt by families who lost loved ones in
New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. The aftermath has had
a profound financial impact on others who work in industries that
have experienced layoffs and downsizing such as tourism (hotels,
airlines, restaurants, ground transportation services provided by
cabs, limos, etc).
There has not been any response for these forgotten victims of this
horrific disaster. In addition, many others, especially our children,
are suffering emotionally because of the 9/11 attacks, the war on
terrorism and anthrax. Feelings of helplessness are pervasive in
our c o m m u n i t y. Our organization has designed a program to
address these concerns. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, firefighters,
police officers and medical personnel emerged as heroes. To reinforce
the high ideals of these professions, we have established a community
service program through which our youth are shown how to create
31 inch, free-standing dolls wearing the apparel of these heroes.
Our organization is offering these dolls to the public for a minimum,
tax deductible contribution of $50.00. Seventy-five percent of the
contributions will go directly to help the survivors of those who
died in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania and the forgotten
financial victims. The remaining funds will be used to underwrite
other projects and activities of our organization.
Our organization is called Youth Organizations United to Rise
(Y.O.U.R.) Community Center. It is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3)
organization, whose mission is to promote the academic, cultural,
social and emotional development of students, as well as computer
literacy, through the operation of year round out-of-school time
programs that deter youth from negative behaviors. Y.O.U.R. is located
at 4913 Fourteenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011 and is open
Monday-Friday, from 6:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Y.O.U.R. operates a before
and after school program and summer camp for students in grades
K-4. A Teen Center has been established for students in grades 5-8.
