THE AUTHOR

The author has farmed over twenty years in northwestern Minnesota and has done almost everything farmers do, including going broke. Every year when the snow flies, he parks the old John Deere and revs up the snowmobile. He has also been known to slice across the snow on cross-country skis. He's a lover of the great outdoors who carries a thermos of coffee, never a gun.

THE BOOK

What do you do when confronted with disturbing circumstances, which cannot be endured and cannot be changed? That was the dilemma the protagonist faced in this story of a woman coming to grips with her past.

Addie Fay Royal has lost her husband, Moses, who had declined into a comatose condition prior to his death. During that period, she found disturbing evidence of his family's unwholesome past. Her world was thrown into disarray by that shocking discovery. Betrayed that Moses had scrupulously kept secrets from her, and troubled that her conception of self and life had been based wholly on shallow misinterpretations, Addie Fay ran away, seeking refuge in the Highwood Mountains.

Life, as she encountered it in the rugged Rockies, was an adventure, often tranquilizing and rewarding, frequently stark and perilous, especially when she found herself an unwelcome intruder in the domain of a ferocious wolverine. For a while, she was favorably distracted by the antics of the cunning and savage little beast, and by two old mountain trappers squatting on her land.

Eventually she had to come to terms with her past, confront what she was powerless to change, and close that chapter of her life. Freeing herself from the burdens of the past, however, meant divorcing herself from long-held misconceptions and erroneous beliefs. Coming face to face with the hateful truth was a painful process. Inevitably, she was driven to find the answers that would lead to deliverance and the sense of renewal for which she was searching.

The wolverine was chosen to serve as a catharsis to Addie Fay's distraction because it is a fascinating creature and so little is actually known about it, its life and ways haven't been done until the theme is trite and its character a stereotype. The wildlife is depicted realistically, the way nature designed them, and not as caricatures with human values.
