THE AUTHOR
As a boy, Samuel Cucinell enjoyed books that gave brief overviews of science and history. His literary high points were One, Two, Three Infinity and 1066 and All That. Unfortunately, Medical School and post doctoral work shifted his reading habits. He obtained Boards in Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and practiced with the Army in Panama, Hawaii and Colorado. Military duties did allow some research and he published 50 scientific papers dealing with drugs and physical stress.
Now retired, Dr. Cucinell is once again reading more entertaining scientific work, most recently, A Mathematician Reads the News-Paper and Connections. His book, A Primer of Alcohol and Alcoholism is his first try at writing for the general readership.
THE BOOK
A Primer of Alcohol and Alcoholism gives an overview of the chemistry, history and vocabulary of alcohol. How and why did it become basic nutrition from the pyramids to Plymouth Rock? Why in 1720 did alcohol become a poison that killed 80% of the children of London.
Every effort at controlling alcohol has failed. The tactics of prohibitionist created the modern governmental lobby and amended the Constitution of the United States. Still, they failed to control alcohol and thereby revealed the weakness of government as a social experimenter.
The alchemist delving into alcohol lay the basis of biochemistry, enzymology, pharmacology and toxicity. Alcohol became the model for all other drugs. An understanding of its workings, dose response and mechanisms under lies the scientific basis of drugs in general. The statistical patterns of alcohol intake, disease and effects on society gives insight into the confusion of controlling other addictive drugs.
Alcohol is part of most peoples' lives, meals and socicialization. It is part of some peoples misery. Research into the genetics, sociology and biohemistry of alcohol offers a chance at effective biochemical support and treatment. Still, the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism today, depends on the drinker recognizing that alcohol is ruining his life.
