Volume I - Breastfeeding is the first chapter in this book to explain central role of breastfeeding in overall wellness. Practical aspects of breastfeeding are also discussed in detail. The next chapters comprise different age groups (Newborns - one month, 2-5 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 3 - 5 years, Volume II - 6-10 years, and 11-18 years). This format is ideal for busy parents because they can read age-appropriate chapter, as their child grows. The subject matter in these chapters is organized as follows: injury prevention, nutrition for age group, child development, behavioral issues, and immunizations. School related problems such as hyperactivity, learning disorders, are covered in the 6-10 years chapter. Adolescent related issues such as suicide, depression, acne, anorexia, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. are discussed in 11-18 years chapter.
This book is unique as follows:
1. Each chapter deals with a different stage:
Breast-feeding (to be read during pregnancy)
Newborn - one month
Two months - five months
Six months - twelve months
One year - two years
Three years - five years
Six years - ten years
Eleven years - eighteen years
This format is ideal for busy parents, you do not have to read the whole book to benefit from it. You can read age-appropriate sections as your child grows.
2. The chapter on breast-feeding is intended to be read during pregnancy and is quite extensive. It is written with the first-time mother in mind, and is based on the latest research. Most parenting books available cover the subject of breast-feeding superficially. Research has shown that 70% of college-educated women breast-feed their children, and many of these women buy an extra book on breast-feeding.
3. The subject matter for each age group is organized as follows:
a. Injury prevention - Safety is given top priority since accidents are the number one cause of death and disability in American children.
b. Nutrition - Proper nutrition is vital for growth and development.
c. Development - Information about appropriate developmental milestones is provided so that parents can monitor their child's development.
d. Behavioral issues such as sleeping patterns, colic, discipline techniques, temper tantrum, and potty training are discussed at length.
e.Immunizations - Information about immunization has exploded in the last few years, and most parenting books on the market have either outdated or scant information. A complete immunization schedule is provided, and benefits and side effects of all vaccines are discussed.
f. 6-10 years chapter has a section about issues related to school such as attention deficits/hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, school phobia, etc. You will not find this information in older parenting books.
g. 11-18 years chapter deals with suicide, depression, substance abuse, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, acne, sexual development, adolescent sexuality, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS, etc.
h. Common illnesses during childhood - Only the common diseases during childhood are discussed such as common cold, diarrhea and vomiting, etc. Many parenting books available cover extensively childhood illnesses which, thanks to medical advances, are very rare today. Due to dramatic reduction in illness of American children, safety and behavioral issues are more important in today's Pediatrics.
