THE BOOK

This title was nominated for the Frankfurt eBook Awards.

"COBB'S CHOICE" is a contemporary suspense novel dealing with a young artist who has slipped into a parallel world and landed in the middle of a sensational murder trial in which he is defendant's counsel. Eleven years before he had faced a choice of directions in his life, and now, in this alternate world (a generation ahead of our world today), he finds himself embroiled in a lifestyle he had then rejected.

If he had ever wondered what his life would have been like if he had made the other decision -- to follow the law -- not his art, Pender Cobb finds out very quickly.

The story follows how he adapts to the parallel world and its bewildering society with its lax morals and heightened mortal dangers; to a different wife -- not Susan, with whom he has been happily in love, but to a wife who is openly having an affair with another man; how he seeks and finds Susan, who is the mother of two children and is married to a stranger; how he conducts the murder trial; how he handles the prestigious law firm of which he is the senior partner and which he discovers is routinely engaged in illegal activities and treasonable practices, etc.

These and other adventures form a series of surprise after surprise events, and lead to a resolution in the parallel world... and the world he left behind... to which he ultimately returns.

SELECTED REVIEW

"Losing his grant was the last straw. Guilt swept through him. As it had so often lately." Pender Cobb, a painter of "storms and passions not sweetness and light," realized he hadn't given his wife, Susan, the type of life he had planned when attending law school before the accident that left his face scarred and his hand crushed. He rolled these thoughts over in his mind in the cab on his way back to Manhattan after he dropped Susan at the airport. Then he dosed off and awoke in the back of a limousine in Connecticut with no scar, no deformity, a different wife, and a different life in a different world. One similar to what he started out to have over eleven years ago. Shades of It's a Wonderful Life with a fascinating, intense twist. Instead of the theme of Jimmy Stewart never having existed, Pender followed a changed life course and everything around him was absurd. Companies didn't exist from his past, the President of the United States had changed, cloning was coming to pass, and the general health of the nation and its infrastructures were poorer. Could one decision to make a slight detour in another direction have changed everyone's life so drastically? Or was it something more? Pender's grasp on reality was shaky, unsure of what was and wasn't real. It appeared his father-in-law, his law firm, and perhaps - him – were involved in illegal business. And where was his love, Susan? Was that her leaving the restaurant? When he tried to catch up, she was gone. "No dream. Something lost. Something gone. He was empty." He couldn't imagine living without her. How many more shocking things would he find out about himself and this new life? The engaging worlds of Cobb's Choice cross and intertwine, leaving Pender to delve into his new existence to find a solution to why and how he came to this predicament. Anyone that has ever had the thought - what if I had just done this, instead of that –aches for Pender. Realistic courtroom scenes and emotionally charged characters fill this tale and thrust Pender into the bowels of a deadly game. Seeleg Lester is a professional writer with a career of more than 200 on screen credits in motion pictures and television, including Perry Mason and the Outer Limits. Deciding to give up the Hollywood life, he changed to fiction and moved to Denver, Colorado, with his wife. If Cobb's Choice is any indication, Mr. Lester has been denying readers his talent of weaving a terrifyingly realistic look into the possible future. - ©2000, Nancy B. Leake, Reviewer
