This is a work of fiction. All characters and events portrayed in this book are fictional, and any resemblance to real people or incidents is purely coincidental.

THE AUTHOR

Whitt McDaniel has lived and farmed in northwestern Minnesota for twenty-five years. She is a lover of the great outdoors and firmly believes that mankind must sanction space for all of Mother Earth's creatures.

THE BOOK

Doraybus was separated from his mother when he was just a pup. He grew up lonely, with no real friends -- only ridicule. He longed to be accepted, even admired. To that end, he spent his youth running and jumping, ever gaining speed and strength. Indeed, he became a mighty dog. Still, the animals in his village didn't value that; they saw only that he was an ugly dog.

When Felicity, a golden-haired beauty, came to live in the village, Doraybus thought the loneliness had come to an end. And it had -- briefly. The treacherous Felicity was a thief, Doraybus was mistakenly blamed for her crimes, and the human master tried to kill him. Wounded and broken-hearted, Doraybus limped off to the Wild Woods where he joined a pack of orphaned timber wolves.

He soon learned the hardships and hazards of life in the wilderness. He had to adapt to the ways of the wild -- and quickly -- if he was to survive. Life in the Wild Woods brought both pleasure and sorrow. Running wild and free with his adopted wolf brothers brought a joy he never thought possible. Losing his best pal brought pain that was almost too great to bear. All in all, the wilderness experiences trained Doraybus away from the gentle, obedient dog he was into the wolf he became.

"A Dog Called Doraybus" is an entertaining story targeted to youthful readers that will surely lure them away from the video and to the written word. This story, with a legendary flavor, brings together two unlikely animals, one beloved by man, one despised. The dog is indisputably man's best friend. The wolf is indisputably the most unjustly maligned, and hated, creature on this planet.

Because wolves consider all other canines as enemies, special circumstances had to be created to make the partnership of dog and wolves credible. Life in the wild is vividly portrayed. The story provides an insight into the nature of the wolf, his character and why he is what he is; how he regards his prey and his enemies; how he lives, hunts, and even loves.
