THE AUTHOR

Born in El Paso, Texas on Oct. 8th, 1953 while my father was in the service. I grew up in East Alton - Wood River, Illinois. One of my first loves was music. I started playing the clarinet in 4th grade and switched to tenor sax in Jr. High. Music greatly influenced my life. I played in all kinds of bands including, rock, jazz, blues, and concert bands.

The dream of music finally faded into the reality of life and work as I became gainfully employed at Olin Corp. in January of 1973. 1 have worked for Olin for 26 years now, working my way up from a beginning labor grade job to my current position as a tool and die developer in the Fabricated Products Department.

I have two beautiful daughters, Carrie who is 25, and Corby, 21 and three wonderful step-children, Sean, 24, Matt, 22, and Tricia, 18. As you can see my wonderful wife, Debbie, and I have had our hands full through the years.

Along with work, we must all have some fun, I have always enjoyed wood working. And then there is fishing, there is nothing that can compare with hooking into a good size largemouth bass! But at the present time, I would have to say that my number one love is golf. I didn't start playing the game, which I once considered the stupidest thing I had ever seen, until I was 32 years old. Now I can't seem to get enough. It is such an addictive game. When I play good, I can't wait to get out again. And if I happen to have an off day, I can't wait to get out again to play better.

Perhaps the most important fun thing that I do is write. I have never considered myself a writer. I just enjoy writing. Sometimes an idea gets into my head and won't let go of me. That's when I start. Usually it ends up being a short story or even a poem. But this last idea still wouldn't go away, and thus was born, Unleashed by the Flood.

THE BOOK

Preface: Do you remember the Great Flood of '93? I know we in the Midwest will remember it for the rest of our lives. The scientists tell us that this great flood, a 500 year flood, is not to be repeated for many generations. The mighty Mississippi river and all of her tributaries were unstoppable. Water from these great rivers reached into places that it had not been in hundreds, perhaps thousands of years.

The flood waters covered thousands of acres of midwestern countryside. Farmers in the rich river basins lost everything, many times without warning, as levees burst under the tremendous pressure. Entire communities were evacuated as the rivers forced their way around, over, or through anything which stood in their path.

The great people of this region fought back the waters for weeks on end, sometimes winning but oftimes losing. We watched the many heroes who battled valiantly to save their homes. Our hearts ached at the sight of many homes of many being washed away by the torrents of water.

Several times the rains stopped and we thought the worst had come and gone as the waters stopped rising. Mother Nature, only teasing us, would release her fury once more with day after day of torrential rain. We wondered how many times we could gather the energy and courage to fight back the waters.

The summer of 1993 proved to be the worst on record in the history of this area, having endured one of the, most devastating natural disasters of all time, The flood changed many lives, but, little did we know what sinister force had been unleashed by the flood!
