THE AUTHOR

Gloria Kositchek is a native of Michigan, however, early in her marriage she moved to California with her husband Don and their three sons. Here the boys attended school and she worked for a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. Her focus was on families of different cultures. Becoming interested in the Native American Hopi Family, she visited the Hopi Mesa in 1993. Surrounded by Hopi culture and their ancient traditions she wondered what it might be like to live on the mesas a hundred years past. It was then that she began to create this fantasy adventure for middle grade readers that takes place on the mesa in the 1890s.

Presently, Gloria and Don and their black Labrador dog, Lizzie, are touring the U.S. in their RV and stopping at schools to tell kids about books and how to create them.

Maybe she'll stop at your school, soon. Wouldn't that be fun? If you would like that, e-mail her at Gvkos@aol.com. Then perhaps she could arrange an author visit at your school.

THE BOOK

Five Golden Feathers is a story about the fears and dreams of eleven-year-old orphan boy, JOSH (JOSHUA) TAYLOR. JOSH lives with his only relative, Great, Great Aunt Belle Taylor, who's almost a hundred. He fears she'll die then he'll have no family. His dream is to go on an adventure like his great, great grandfather, Old Timothy Taylor had when he was just sixteen-years-old...where there will be fun instead of sadness.

Aunt Belle reads to JOSH many times from Old Timothy's diary about his travels on foot from his home in Virginia to find land and build a home in California. JOSH loves to hear about Old Timothy's visit to the Hopi Mesas in the 1890s, especially the magical powers of the Hopi Kachina doll an old Hopi man made for him...and how if anyone tampered with that Kachina doll something weird would happen. Every time JOSH looks up at the shelf in the hall and sees the Kachina doll's golden feathers glistening in the sun...he wonders what weird thing could happen after all these years?

But when he whisks the doll off to his attic room, something weird does happen. JOSH and the ghost of his great, great grandfather, Old Timothy are zapped back in time over a hundred years.

Then another weird thing happens. They find they have arrived five years further back in time than planned. Old Timothy is only eleven and isn't to arrive at the Mesas for five more years. He rushes back to Virginia to wait until he's sixteen and can start his journey.

The third weird thing that happens is JOSH becomes trapped inside a Hopi boy's body and must live as two people for five years...always suspected of being a witch, always fearing that one day the Witch Doctor will declare him a witch then he must leave the village....where he must wander in the wilderness, alone.

Will it be forever? Will JOSH ever get out of the Hopi boy's body? If he doesn't, will he be declared a witch and sent from the village? Can he survive alone? Will Old Timothy ever find him and take him back to his own time zone to live again with Aunt Belle?

These questions and many more will be answered when you read this fantasy, adventure novel written for middle grade readers.
