Victoria arrives at the canyon to find an archeological expedition in possession of her childhood playhouse - an ancient, abandoned pueblo. She senses the restless shadows of spirits that would have been better left undisturbed. Strange tensions mar the relationships between the members of the expedition.
The head archeologist, Damon Velasquez, asks Victoria to search for the temple he believes is hidden somewhere close by. She finds a make-shift altar with the savaged body of a rabbit hidden at the far end of the canyon. The discovery leads to the location of the temple and a rash of ritualistic murders.
Terror follows the footsteps of Victoria and Evan, who struggle against not only the invisible spirit of an ancient war god, but their growing involvement with each other and the need to come to terms with their own shadowed pasts.
The Road Man appears when life and death hang in the balance. With his help, she contacts the Spirit of Quetzacoatl who gives her the means to fulfill her destiny as savior of both halves of her heritage - Indian and white - by battling the reincarnated spirit of Montezuma who returned to rid the New World of the European invaders who once cost him his honor and his life.
Victoria's canyon is fictitious, but the legends of the Superstitions and its people are drawn from actual historical accounts. The beliefs and actions of Montezuma are culled from records of his life to create a plausible, exciting story.
