THE BOOK
Flo Pualk and her husband have retired recently and moved from metropolitan Northern New Jersey to rural Southern Vermont.
Flo's husband, Lem, is in dire need of a replacement prosthesis for his Left leg.
Flo is a hyper-activist in all matters. The word patience is not in her vocabulary. She is retired from the Orange New Jersey Police Department where she served twenty five years as Radio Dispatcher.
His delay of the delivery of Lem's "new leg" to their Vermont residence has Flo agitated at Lou Szczange, the prosthesis salesman.
Unable to contact Lou by phone, Flo seeks to get action by phoning a missing person report to Bennington County Sheriff, Pat Brazel.
The Lawman's laidback attitude toward the report infuriates Flo whereupon she embarks on a campaign to unseat Pat in the upcoming election. Flo is convinced Pat is an inefficient antique who holds office at the pleasure of local Vermont politicians. The Sheriff is a little uneasy about the public perception of why he has been elected repeatedly.
Lem's leg is restored in due time, and Szczange volunteers to manage Flo's campaign in the run for sheriff. His rhetoric bashes Pat Brazel's reputation and alleges the Sheriff is the product of cronyism.
When Lou is shot and killed while hunting, Flo finds herself needing and seeking the support of Pat Brazel to bring the shooter to justice. Her foe is now her friend.
Pat must cease to consider Szczange as the enemy and become solicitous of him in the role of the victim of an accident, or maybe a crime.
Lou Szczange was shot and killed on the Green Mountain. Possibly taken for a deer. The person who fired the shot is not known. The body is found only after an eighteen hour search.
Lou Szczange was 40 years old and leaves a family. He was a son of Jacob Szczange. He leaves his wife, Ima, his daughter Lady and his brother Harry.
Pat's task is to solve the mystery of who shot Lou. He must thwart any adverse Public perception that the shooting is politically motivated.
The Sheriff and his staff scour the woods for evidence in the vicinity of where Lou's body was found.
Based on their findings, a manhunt ensues for four material witnesses who are discovered to be animal rights activists out to harass hunters.
How does Pat solve the mystery of who shot Lou and avoid any suggestion that the shooting is politically motivated?
