THE BOOK
Statistics show that the majority of women receive random obscene pone calls at least once in their lifetime. The impetus for this novel sprang from my own experience of a single terrifying call that left me badly shaken. Although the voice on the phone was that of a stranger, he knew I was alone in the house, he knew my name. It took almost an hour for rational thought to return and for me to realize that my name was in the phone book and most husbands were at work at that time of day. Even as sanity returned, the seeds of this novel sprouted. Within minutes, I was glued to my computer screen, the story line clearly defined in my mind. The story begins with that same suggestive phone call, one where the caller seems to know more about what the heroine is doing than he should, and ends with a heart-stopping battle for survival.
The ringing of the phone pulls Jeanne Stafford from the shower one night. "I know your name, I know your address, and your husband doesn't live there any more, does he?" The words her caller speaks are only the beginning of a subtle reign of terror that leaves Jeanne doubting her own sanity.
She returns from work to find lights she thought she'd left on, off. A dead rat appears in her kitchen sink and is gone from the garbage can in the morning when she tries to show it to her sister, Ellen. A black widow spider is found in her bed, and the calls continue even after she changes her phone number. Recently divorced and living alone, Jeanne finds the police skeptical of her belief that she is being terrorized, even after all her clothes are found cut into shreds when she returns from dinner with the new man in her life.
When the person threatening her, slashes the tires of her car in front of her sister's house, she realizes she can't go to family for help or he might hurt them as well. The threats and incidents escalate in frequency, and she finds herself facing, alone, her enemy in a final night of deadly terror.
