THE BOOK

The lifelong evolution of Ned Shelle from grandson and son, to brother, nephew, close friend, husband, father and grandfather, comprises a series of metamorphoses representative of the way we humans mature, comingle and cohabitate.

It is Summer vacation and Ned and his Sister Annette are going on their annual trip to Grandma's in the family car.

The parents, Will and Caroline, make the preparations. Will deals with possible problems with the car. Caroline prepares a lunch.

Embarking on the eighty mile tour, they picnic en-route, and have car troubles typical of the the "Twenties". Each child pitches in to give assistance. Ned helps change a tire and fetch water for the car. Caroline directs Annette in doing picnic chores.

The two children are left to spend part time with the grandparents and part with their aunt and uncle, Will's Sister and her husband. It's fun time, but when the adults require, Ned and Annette are expected to pitch in just like at home.

Ned matures; finds new friends, girls; learns to drive; finishes school and starts college.

WWII comes and goes. Ned and friend Jim survive and both enter married life.

Ned and wife Kathy raise four children who in turn produce nine grandchildren. Ned is concerned that one grandson is addicted to the video tube, is disinterested in and, ill prepared for adulthood.

The interests the twelve year old Chris, appear to be limited to computer games and athletics.

The boy's father, Ned's eldest son Will, is a successful attorney. Will and Micki have three older girls, and Chris.

The current school year having just ended, Ned and Kathy prepare for the annual visit of Will, Micki and their kids.

During a gathering of the adult family members, Ned speaks of his concerns about Chris.

His brother in law, Jeff, suggests that Ned pose some questions to Chris about solutions to an everyday nuts and bolts problem around the house and see what his answers are.

As a result, Ned is pleasantly surprised when Chris repairs a flat tire on Will's old bike that has been gathering dust out in Ned's garage.
