THE BOOK
While selling US technology in Saudi Arabia, an American encounters a sinister activity that threatens his life and world peace, as his technology is stolen for military purposes.
Industrial espionage is a serious problem for industrialised nations, and the CIA has listed dozens of countries that are stealing American technology. This novel is about a fictional operation against the USA, that takes place in Saudi Arabia, Oman, France and several other countries. As the mystery unfolds and the suspense rises, it exposes the corruption and dirty tricks involved in international business, as well as the personal dangers encountered by the people involved.
NOTE: 1. Woven into the story is information on industrial espionage, international business transactions and corruption, as well as on the military, police and counter espionage forces of Saudi Arabian, Oman and Pakistan.
2. This is one of a series of international business related mystery novels by Jerry Werner. Another book, The Mexican Money Massage, has Edwards working with drug smugglers and money launders in Mexico and Canada. Future books will have Edwards fighting illegal immigration by pirates in Asia, and Russian based international extortion in Cuba.
Sample of Work
Before Ireland could answer, the driver interrupted. "You want to go to Chop Chop Square?"
"What's that?" Ireland asked.
"That's where they cut the hands off. They do it today. After Friday prayers. It just up here."
"No, not today." Ireland answered for both of them.
Suddenly the cars in the street were engulfed in a sea of people, all cheering and waving. Edwards looked in the direction they were pointing, and his pulse leaped in shock. On a raised platform, between two upright pillars joined by a crossbar, a figure in traditional Saudi male dress swung from a rope around his neck, his legs twitching in death. The only thing Edwards could think of in his stunned state, was how the gutra managed to stay on the man's lifeless head.
"What is it?" Ireland asked, leaning over and looking out Edwards' window. "Oh my God!" He recoiled in horror.
"Do not get out of the car," the driver warned, as the boisterous crowd surged all around them.
"No damn way," Edwards replied, still staring at the body.
"Lock the doors." The driver ordered. "If they see you they will want to push you up to the front by the hanger. They think this is a big joke on foreign people."
They sat in silence, hoping the crowd would not notice them. Suddenly a scrawny bearded face with only two front teeth peered into the window beside Edwards' head. Seeing the Americans, the man shrieked in triumph telling all around him of his find. Within seconds excited hands were banging on the windows and pulling at the door handles trying to get at the passengers in the taxi. One of the attackers managed to rip off a windshield wiper and began flailing the windshield as if he was applying a lashing punishment. The three occupants of the car were frozen in horror as the vehicle rocked to the beating it was getting from the blood thirsty mob.
As quickly as it began, the attack stopped. The horde suddenly began to move across the square, and in a few minutes they were gone. The three people in the car remained speechless in fright, thankful that the incident was over, and that the raving pack of fanatics didn't get to them. After what seemed an eternity to Edwards, the driver recovered from his shock and slowly began maneuvering the taxi through the stalled traffic.
As they left the area in silence Edwards now knew that he was dealing with a totally different world, and he questioned why he was doing it. He glanced over at Ireland, who had just vomited into a piece of newspaper that was on the car floor. Neither of the two men were able to speak to each other. The driver, who had regained his composure, was also not in a talkative mood. As they sped through the city in silence, Edwards wondered what caused the mob to leave them so suddenly, but he was grateful that they did.
