Escaping with Winona, a Delaware captive, they canoe the Delaware to Valley Forge to report the Saratoga victory to Washington. Trailed by Mohawk down the Delaware, then by British spies, the almost lose their treasure chart.

On their voyage to bring a message to Ben Franklin in Paris, Peleg and Becky must outwit a spy ship. During an historic sea battle, the schooners reach Barbados to raise funds for Washington. Finally, after retrieving the Barbuda treasure despite run-ins with the same spy ship and a slaver, Becky is "tricked" by Peleg into a wedding. Together, they return to Rhode Island with French arms.
