THE AUTHOR

Originally from upstate New York, James La Valley attended the University of Virginia, completing his BA in English and three years of medical school. He transferred fields to gain an MA in Bible and later another MA in English. With this background, he pastored, taught college and administered federal health programs, conducting seminars throughout the West Indies, the locale for the adventures of the Freedom Quest series.

THE BOOK

Acadia, 1755, Jeannette Le Blanc and her family flee British deportation by taking Holden's schooner, the Free Spirit to the West Indies - where Jeanette's espionage escalates intrigue and romance until New Orleans - and she discovers France's strategic weakness to report to Washington, then welcomes a life with Holden.


Captain Holden Le Valley returns to Acadia in 1755 to persuade Jeannette Le Blanc to sail on a honeymoon aboard his schooner, the Free Spirit. He spots smoke ascending from the coast and finds the Le Blanc farm in ruins. Brave Waters, an Indian, helps Holden rescue Jeannette and her family from British capture.

The Free Spirit sails to Rhode Island to join Chris and Anne's Liberte on a joint trading venture to Barbados. At Mount Vernon, Jeannette resolves to spy for Colonel Washington among contacts in the Caribbean and New Orleans to discover France's true intentions for North America during the emerging French and Indian Wars.

When the Free Spirit captures the elusive pirate Shane, the governor of Martinique entertains Holden;s crew royally, especially Jeannette. She cleverly taps the governor's knowledge of the French court's intentions, Holden almost loses Jeannette until the governor's deceptive offer of a haven for the Le Blancs is exposed.

Finally seeing that her family is established in New Orleans, Jeannette is tempted to remain by Henri, who trades in Canadian furs. He reveals the weakest link in French supply lines is Fort Niagara. Suspected of her spying by a French Officer, Jeannette finally leaves her family behind and sails back to Mount Vernon and Rhode Island on the Free Spirit, Only after she's injured during a storm off Norfolk is Jeannette able to drop her vendetta agains the French and British and pursue her future with Holden.
