BARBADOS, 1751- Anne Delmas, lured into a pirate network, escapes on Chris and Holden's schooner, the Liberte. THE CARIBBEAN- Torn between these brothers, she helps recover treasure, encountering pirates, volcanos, and Carib Indians. DEVIL'S TRIANGLE- Three ships converge, and three lives discover their destiny in a deadly storm.
The plot of Freedom Voyage weaves together several strands of reality into an imaginary adventure romance.
First, it is inspired by family history. My father, at 98, still clearly recounted events his Grandma Hetty, born in 1821, relayed to him in 1905 about the French brothers, Christophe and Holden, who encountered privateers on their trading cruise to the West Indies in 1751.
Further strands of reality are drawn from historical and literary sources, and from George Washington's journal of his 1751 trip to Barbados.
Utilizing notes from my own eyewitness exploration of the very sites in the West Indies which my forefathers could have frequented, I portray through their eyes the intrigue and romance of Freedom Voyage.
Anne Delmas had sailed from France to Barbados in 1751 to be the governess for two sons of notorious Colonel Shane. Her premonitions are confirmed when an inadvertent discovery reveals that Shane had murdered his wife to prevent disclosure of his pirate network. Now Anne must rescue the teenaged sons, David and Jamie, from their father.
Captain Christophe Le Valley and his brother Holden, owners of the French schooner Liberte, are waiting on Barbados to see if Anne is truly safe in her new situation. Also on the island, the youthful George Washington assists the brothers to rescue Anne.
The Liberte heads for Tobago, where Anne retrieves a chart leading to the sons' fortune, hidden by Shane on Bequia of the Grenadines. Directing his henchman Labat on Tobago to chase the Liberte up the islands to recapture Anne, his sons, and the treasure, Shane's efforts almost succeed when some of his crew marooned on Barbuda board the Liberte, but Chris outsmarts them.
While eluding volcanic eruptions, Carib Indian capture and manhunts for slaves he rescued, Chris struggles to escape the siren call of the sea to establish a life with Anne in Rhode Island, finally overcoming his brother Holden's determined competition.
The theme of freedom is richly illustrated as Anne and Chris champion the ideals of the "inalienable rights of man."
